Introducing Rooted: Behind the collection with Wild Fawn Founder, Emma

As the founder of Wild Fawn, one of my favourite things is developing new collections, and I always draw on nature to inspire our new jewellery designs. Today, I'm excited to introduce you to our newest collection - Rooted.

The inspiration behind Rooted

This new collection is inspired by the most beautiful walk I went on back in January along the River Itchen. The river was so clear and calming but there was so much wildlife around, and even in the middle of winter, the whole ecosystem was thriving. The feeling of contentment didn’t leave me for a long time, so the Rooted collection is inspired by that.

This summer, I went back there to get inspiration and build the new collection around the vines climbing up the trees, the pebbles lying at the bottom of the clear water, and the twists and turns the river took.

I've made a lot of the pieces weighty on purpose, so when we’re wearing them, we can feel them on us. The smooth metal is like the tumbled pebbles, the movement and imperfections in each piece reminding us of our own connection to nature.

A three-panel lifestyle collage showing a woman in a white dress outdoors. The top panel shows her holding a camera on a wooden bridge, the bottom-left panel shows her standing on a small bridge by a pond surrounded by trees, and the right panel shows her writing in a sketchbook.

A collection of two halves

I noticed the river had both energetic and peaceful, slow moments, sometimes so close to each other. Taken from that, I designed this collection to be one of two halves, with the fine, delicate pieces that sit close to the skin representing the fast pace of life and the heavier, sculptural forms with real presence depicting the slow gentle moments that are just as important.

The making process

With the exception of our Chunky Snake Chain, I formed each Rooted piece by hand using jeweller's wax. The wax was carved, moulded, rolled, and cut to form each piece. Rooted was especially experimental to make; I loved twisting the wax to create a vine-like texture seen in our Statement Vine Bangle, and looping it around itself to form our beautiful Knot Studs, Knot Necklace and Knot Bangle.

I like to make notes and create sketches of potential designs while out in nature, and then refine and sculpt them on the days that follow, either in our South East London workshop or in my home studio. Once the pieces are made in wax, I share them with the rest of the Wild Fawn team to gather feedback and final tweaks, before sending them to our trusted Birmingham-based metal casters. They handle them with care to make moulds of each piece, and return them to us in recycled solid sterling silver or 9 carat yellow gold.

A split-screen view showing hands arranging small polished stones on a white marble surface, alongside a ceramic mug, a small sculpting tool, and red wax rings on a white marble tabletop.

When they arrive, they're unfinished with sprues attached, so we remove these, buff and polish each component, and assemble the pieces - whether that's soldering on ear pins and bails or stringing onto chains - ready to package up and ship out to you.

Every part of the making process happens in England; this has always been the case, it won't ever change, and I'm really proud of that.

A look at the collection

I'd love to share the stories behind each piece. The collection features textures and shapes drawn from natural elements found alongside a riverbed, stream, or in a woodland.

A big part of this launch is how it honours contrast; the pieces vary from delicate and dainty to bold and sculptural. These together in the same collection celebrate the opposing rhythms of water, and how each is necessary for the ecosystem to survive. I love how this sentiment can be brought into our lives; there is no calm without chaos, pace without pause, high without low.

Entwined

Our Entwined pieces are inspired by how tree vines twist, turn, and entwine as they climb toward the light, all while providing shelter for what thrives below. These pieces remind us that needing support and giving it go hand in hand. Sometimes we're the vine, other times we're the shelter, and often, we're both.

Knot

A knot is a symbol of tight bonds found both in nature and human relationships. We love how the boldness of our chunky knotted pieces honours that symbolism, reminding us that nature thrives on unity, each part supporting the whole.

Our Knot Necklace goes a step further, celebrating the calming effects that nature can have. When worn, it mimics the calming weight of a stone on your chest, drawing on the pieces of nature that anchor us in stillness.

Spiral and Molten Oval

Seen in both stud and pendant necklace form, our spiral and molten oval designs depict water and its unique journeys. Our Spiral pieces are inspired by the fluid beauty of water, from the powerful swirls of whirlpools to the rebellious counter-currents of wild eddies. Our Molten Oval has an open shape at its centre, echoing the clear pocket that forms as water skims over a raised pebble in a stream.

Organic Signet Rings

For the signet rings in the collection, I wanted to lean into classic, timeless signet ring shapes, but add an organic, textured finish.

Bold, comfortable, and ungendered (like every Wild Fawn piece!), the Oval, Square, and Heart Organic Signet Rings were hand-carved to mimic the texture left behind by tumbling stones in a moving riverbed. Our heart signet ring is also available in a smaller size - perfect as a pinkie ring.

Gemstone Rings

I adore working with gemstones, especially lab-grown diamonds and ethically-sourced sapphires for our beautiful engagement and wedding rings, but for Rooted, I had so much fun exploring different stones and choosing cuts and hues that complemented the collection.

Our Organic Citrine Ring features a beautiful cabochon-cut light orange citrine, bezel-set in an organic band, while our Smoky Quartz Ring is a bolder piece accented with a bold, bezel-set smoky quartz stone in a rich brown shade.

Meandering Rivers

Rivers and streams provide so much inspiration, and it continues into the Meandering River Ring and Flowing Bar Ring.

The ring, with an S-curve design, reminds us of the unique journeys and paths taken, much like a winding river to a tranquil oxbow lake, while the textured Flowing Bar Necklace honours the ever-changing currents of running streams, reminding us to move with change, finding ease rather than resistance.

Pebbles and Stones

The Balancing Pebble Dangle Earrings mimic the calm of stacking stones at a river's edge: a peaceful, meditative ritual, each one balanced with care on the last.

I created the textured surface of our Stone-Pressed Pendant Necklace by imprinting from a real pebble, which I handpicked from the beautiful River Vyrnwy, onto the jeweller's wax. Strung on a slim snake chain for a unique, sleek finish.

Silver Staples

When designing Rooted, I wanted to include some classic, everyday jewellery pieces in suits-everyone styles, but with a Wild Fawn touch. I felt like I hadn't yet designed a chunky silver hoop earring, so this was first on my agenda, and the Silver Molten Chunky Hoops were born; bold, everyday hoops with an organic, molten finish.

Our Silver Chunky Snake Chain is also a welcome addition to our offering of chains, being bold, chunky, and easy to wear. Available in two lengths, and made from recycled solid sterling silver.

I hope you love Rooted as much as I loved making it. It's all available to order online now, where it'll be made in our London workshop by our team of talented jewellers.
