When is Mother's Day 2026? Origin, history & ideas

When is Mother's Day this year?

This year, Mother's Day is Sunday, 15th March 2026. This is when Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the United Kingdom, and so is when we'll be celebrating as a UK-based team!

It's worth noting that Mother's Sunday is celebrated on different days around the world - continue reading to find out when Mother's Day is in other European countries, North America, and Australia.

When is UK Mother's Day 2026?

As we just mentioned, UK Mother's Day 2026 falls on Sunday, 15th March this year. The date of UK Mother's Day changes every year, as it is aligned with the Christian calendar and when Lent and Easter fall, which are determined by lunar cycles.

Annually, Mother's Day falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is usually in the month of March; in 2026, it lands on Sunday, 15th March.

When is Mother's Day in Europe 2026?

Most countries in Europe celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, which in 2026, will be Sunday, 10th May. Countries will be celebrating on 10th May include Germany, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Not all countries in Europe celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May, though - France recognises Mother's Day as the last Sunday of May, which in 2026 is 31st May, while Spain, Portugal, Romania and Lithuania celebrate on the first Sunday of May, falling on 3rd May this year.

Three European countries coincide Mother's Day with International Women's Day, which is fixed to 8th March every year. These countries are Kosovo, Moldova and Montenegro, which take the day to honour the contributions and achievements of women and mothers with gifts and events.

This isn't an extensive list, but these are the most common dates that Mother's Day is celebrated around Europe.

When is Mother's Day in the US and Canada?

Like many European countries, USA and Canada celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May, which is 10th May in 2026. In fact, the day was established in the USA in 1914 (more on this below), which was then adopted by some European countries thereafter.

When is Mother's Day Australia?

Like many European countries, Australia also adopted the popular US model of celebrating Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May, and so in 2026, Australia will honour Mother's Day on 10th May.

What is Mother's Day? Origin and history

Mother's Day is an annual occasion where mothers, mother-figures and the contribution of motherhood to society are recognised and celebrated. The origin and history of the day vary across regions as mentioned above; the UK celebrate on the fourth Sunday of Lent each year, which links to the historical Christian tradition of returning to one's "mother church" on this day. This day was an opportunity for families to be reunited after working away as domestic servants, and it was customary for children to pick flowers for their mothers on the day.

American Mother's Day, recognised on the second Sunday of May in North America, Australia and most European countries, has an entirely different origin story, and was established in the early 1900s by Anna Jarvis. Anna was an activist who founded the day as a way to honour her late mother's wishes, with the first Mother's Day on May 10th, 1908. After campaigning for nationwide recognition and celebration of maternal contributions to society, it was later established as an official national holiday in 1914.

What to do on Mother's Day: Ideas to make it extra special

With UK Mother's Day approaching, it's time to start thinking about how you'll be spending the occasion. How you spend Mother's Day will depend on whether you are in close proximity to your own mother or mother-figure you want to honour, and if you are a mother yourself.

Common ways to spend Mother's Day include exchanging gifts and spending quality time with their mum, mother-figure or grandmother. A family meal or afternoon tea is a popular choice, allowing everyone to come together to raise a glass and enjoy good food. Another option is a creative bonding activity, like flower arranging or jewellery-making. Encouraging your mum to relax and enjoy some "me" time is a wonderful way to celebrate too, either in the restful environment of home or with a trip to the spa.

First Mother's Days for new mums are particularly special, so if you're the partner or a loved one of someone who has welcomed a baby since last Mother's Day, it's an opportunity to celebrate their journey into motherhood for the first time.

What to get your Mum for Mother's Day

  1. Flowers: a classic gift to brighten mum's day, giving flowers for Mother's Day dates back to the historic Christian tradition in which children picked flowers when reuniting on the fourth Sunday of Lent, where Mother's Day is thought to have originated in the UK. In the US, founder of American Mother's Day Anna Jarvis declared white carnations as the official flower of the holiday, however a bunch of your mum's favourite kind, whether it's roses, springtime daffodils or lilies, are sure to bring a smile to her face.
  2. Handmade, thoughtful jewellery: For a Mother's Day gift that lasts longer than flowers, many opt for jewellery. Jewellery has the power to capture memories and emotions, especially when thoughtfully chosen or personalised.
