A parti sapphire is a sapphire that displays two or more colours, typically blues, greens, and yellows. The colours of parti sapphires are separated as if cleanly partitioned, hence 'parti' in the name.
A similar colouring is the equally beautiful teal sapphire. Not to be confused with the parti sapphire, this colour also features blues, greens, and yellows, but as a single blended colour.
How are parti sapphires formed?
Naturally occurring parti sapphires get their unique colour partitioning from the environment. Like all other sapphires, parti sapphires are a variety of the mineral corundum, a crystalline aluminium oxide which forms deep below the earth's surface.
As the crystals form and grow, they are exposed to various trace elements which affect their colour, such as iron, chromium, magnesium, and titanium. In the environments where parti sapphires are found, there are unusual combinations of these elements, interacting with different parts of the crystals and resulting in specific zones of colour.

How to care for a parti sapphire ring
Parti sapphires are extremely hard, ranking 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, just one place behind diamonds, the hardest natural substance on earth. These striking gemstones are hard enough to withstand scratches from everyday objects like keys and coins, making them better than other gemstones for engagement rings, which may suffer daily bumps and scuffs.
Thanks to this hardness, they're a very durable stone, but unfortunately not quite indestructible. Avoid wearing a parti sapphire engagement ring while working with harder materials, and remove it when using abrasive cleaning products. Although chemicals such as bleach and chlorine won't damage an untreated sapphire, they will certainly damage the metal settings it's held in, which could result in a lost stone.
