Choosing wedding jewellery as a same-sex couple

At Wild Fawn, we are incredibly lucky to help so many couples of all sexualities choose their dream wedding jewellery. As an LGBTQ+ owned jewellery business, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all of our customers.

While ultimately, wedding ring shopping is specific to each couple, and shouldn't follow any 'rules', discussions around tradition and specific considerations often arise when we meet same-sex couples. Today, we thought we'd share the answers to some of the most-asked questions we receive from LGBTQ+ couples when it comes to choosing wedding jewellery.

What considerations are important for wedding ring designs for gay couples?

Whether you choose something traditional or unique, matching or different, here are some of the things many consider when choosing wedding rings as a same-sex couple.

Are you supposed to get matching wedding rings as a same sex couple?

The answer to this is a simple no, unless you want to! When it comes to wedding ring shopping, there is nothing you are 'supposed' to do. This is a common question amongst all couples, but especially same-sex couples - this arises as some may think there are only a few feminine, masculine or gender-neutral styles, and so it might be the done thing to match or have something similar to your betrothed. However, with the wide variety of textures and shapes - not to mention the endless design possibilities of going bespoke - this is absolutely not the case.

So, unless this is something you'd really like, you don't 'have' to match, however we do like the idea if this is what suits you! At Wild Fawn, we can help design matching or complementary rings that honour your unity (read on for some of our ideas!), or work with you to create rings that celebrate your individual styles!

How to choose complementary wedding bands

If you'd like to have wedding bands that match in some way or complement each other, there are many ways to do this. The most popular ideas amongst both straight and gay couples include...

  1. Different design, same finish: One of you could have a thicker, flat wedding ring in yellow gold, while the other chooses a shaped, slimmer design in rose gold, but they can be cohesive in their finish; whether you both choose a classic polished finish, or something unique like a frosted, brushed or hammered finish. We specialise in different textures and finishes at Wild Fawn, with our ready-to-wear collection highlighting six options that we apply by hand to your ring.

  2. Different design, same metal: If you both love the same metal, this is an easy way to choose complementary wedding rings while still being individual. Two completely different designs could be subtly tied together by both being in your choice of yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum.

  3. Using gemstones: Many like to add gemstones to their wedding bands, and as lovers of ethically-sourced sapphires and lab diamonds, we're all for it. Having different thicknesses, shapes or profiles in your wedding rings can be entwined by using the same stone within your personal designs.

  4. Wedding ring engraving: A popular choice for all couples, matching engraving can help make your rings super personal and symbolise your bond. Wedding Ring Engraving is an easy add-on if shopping for your wedding rings online. Read our jewellery engraving ideas for inspiration.

This isn't an extensive list of course - if you have ideas on how you'd like your wedding rings to complement eachother, we're all ears! Simply book a free wedding ring consultation with us to chat.

Will your wedding ring be part of a wedding stack if one or both of you are wearing an engagement ring?

It's important to consider which of you are wearing an engagement ring - or if you both are - as the design of your engagement ring could affect the wedding ring design options available to you. Many want a cohesive 'wedding stack' which means their engagement and wedding rings 'fit' together, especially if the engagement ring is low-set, meaning a shaped or curved wedding ring might be preferred. Whether just one or both of you have an engagement ring, this is something to make your jeweller aware of when choosing wedding rings so they can help you create the perfect ring combination(s), or a beautiful wedding ring that'll be worn on its own.

We specialise in creating wedding bands that fit low-set engagement rings, 3d scanning your ring to create perfectly-paired wedding stacks.

Do you want to go traditional or non-traditional?

As we mentioned before, discussions around whether to choose traditional or non-traditional rings arise in consultations with all of our customers, but especially same-sex couples. We find some love to honour tradition and celebrate their marriage with something simple and traditional, while others love to go against the grain by choosing something non-traditional, or with non-traditional elements. This choice is completely up to you as individuals, and we're happy to share our range of traditional bands plus more unique, contemporary designs.

Wedding ring styles popular among same sex couples

We can't speak to the entire LGBTQ+-community, only our customers, some of our same-sex couples have been choosing curved nesting rings with an irregular/organic texture like the one pictured below. This is a style we're famous for amongst women and men who have a low-set engagement ring, and one we love making.

Flush-set gemstones are also popular at the moment, especially for the individual within a same-sex couple who does not wear an engagement ring. The sapphires and lab-diamonds allow them to have subtle sparkle and /or colour, without having the flashiness of an engagement ring; it ticks both boxes, and we love this approach.

These are just two design choices we've recently found popular amongst same-sex couples, but with our bespoke wedding ring service, the possibilities are endless! We can't wait to hear your ideas.

Wedding ring engraving ideas for same sex couples

We engrave hundreds of wedding rings every year, each one as individual and personal as the next, so we haven't seen any specific themes that same-sex couples choose. For any couple, the most common engraving is their initials and a meaningful date - perhaps when they first met, or the date of their wedding. These are lovely, timeless ideas that will never go out of style.

For something a little different or playful, we love it when couples engrave a secret phrase that carries a meaning only they know - perhaps an inside-joke, special quote or meaningful phrase that's related to their relationship. We have even had couples submitting what they want engraved in secret, so the engraving is only revealed to their partner when the rings are ready, or on their wedding day; a way to add surprise and fun to the experience!

Depending on the wedding ring you choose, there are many possibilities for wedding ring engraving. Our jewellery engraving ideas article runs through some of our favourite ideas, and you can ask any questions you might have during your wedding ring consultation.

If you're a recently-engaged same-sex couple that had questions about wedding ring shopping, we hope this has been helpful! The bottom line is that there are no rules about what you should or should not choose for your wedding bands; choosing or designing something that you like is all we recommend, and we can help you determine the best shapes,
