What to do if your engagement or wedding ring is too big

It can be thoroughly disappointing to discover your engagement or wedding ring doesn't quite fit. This can happen for several reasons, from significant weight change to an incorrectly guessed ring size.

Whether uniquely designed or specially chosen for you, rings are very special pieces of jewellery. You deserve for your ring to fit well and feel good on your finger, and to ensure that, getting it professionally resized is the best solution. However, there may be a wait until you can make that happen, so a temporary solution could be needed.

Today, we're uncovering all you need to know about this topic, including how to tell if your ring is the right size, temporary fixes, and how to get your ring professionally resized.

How to tell if your ring is too big

If you're wondering how big is too big for your ring, you're not alone. This is a very commonly asked question, as many people really aren't quite sure how a ring you wear permanently is supposed to feel! Look out for the following signs to work out if your wedding ring is too large.

Your ring is likely too big if:

  • It feels uncomfortable between your fingers

  • It slides off your finger with no resistance

  • It constantly spins around your finger

  • The stone flips back and forth

  • There is too much space between the band and your finger - the easiest way to tell is to make a fist and check the gap

  • The skin beneath the ring becomes red and itchy - 'ring rash' or 'ring dermatitis' is caused by a loose ring causing friction, or moisture and soap getting trapped between the ring and your skin

Permanent ring resizing

The best solution for a ring that is too large is, of course, permanent resizing by professional jewellers. This ensures that the ring truly fits without extra bits of plastic or metal keeping it in place, and will do so for as long as your finger remains the same size.

If your engagement or wedding ring was made by a Wild Fawn and you've discovered straight away that it doesn't fit, you can send it back to us for resizing. Because we make everything to order, we don't have spare versions of our rings in storage, which means we cannot send out a replacement. Instead, we'll need to work carefully on your existing ring to alter its size. For engagement and wedding rings, we offer one complimentary ring size adjustment. Any additional adjustments are £75 each. For engagement and wedding ring resizes, simply reach out to our Bespoke Operations Co-ordinator, Hazel, at bespoke@wildfawnjewellery.com.

Our non-wedding and engagement rings are made the same way: we don't have our stacking and signet rings in stock, and so a resize is best, allowing us to adjust the existing piece instead of using new materials to make a replacement. Because of the time taken by our team to resize your ring, ring resizes are priced at £15. To organise a resize, contact Annie at customercare@wildfawnjewellery.com.

Temporary solutions

If you're unable to send your wedding or engagement ring to be resized straight away, there are a few popular solutions to see you and your ring through the wait.

Ring size adjusters

If you're keen on wearing your ring before sending it away and need something quick and simple to make the ring fit, try a ring size adjuster. Coming in several forms and widely available across the internet, these adjusters are usually made of flexible plastic or silicone.

The most common types of ring size adjusters are spirals and clips. The spirals are long and transparent, designed to wrap around the underside of the ring to 'thicken' it. You can use scissors to snip the spiral to size. The clips are clipped on the inside of the underside of the ring, adding extra padding on just the inside, unlike the spirals.

Both of these solutions work well temporarily, but we'd advise against permanent use, as they can be a little uncomfortable and may discolour after prolonged wear.

Ring guards

Another temporary solution is a ring guard bar; however, we personally advise against this method and are mentioning it here to explain why. Ring guards are curved metal bars with tiny 'arms'. The bar is clipped in place to act as a new underside to the ring's band, and the arms are designed to be clamped to tighten around the band, typically with small pliers. These ring resizers and the tools used to fix them in place can scratch some materials, especially softer metals such as gold.

Ring guards are simply not worth the risk, so if you want a temporary resizer, opt for the soft and flexible plastic and silicone spirals and clips.

Wear the ring on a necklace

If you want to keep your ring close but don't want to chance a ring size adjuster or guard, thread your ring onto a chain necklace and wear it around your neck. Once you've got your engagement or wedding ring resized, you'll still have the chain to wear for years to come.

Safe storage

Our favourite solution while you wait to send a ring for resizing is to store it. We send our engagement and wedding rings in protective, soft-lined boxes, which are the perfect place to keep your ring safe. If your ring is from a different jeweller and didn't come with a box, there are many simple, affordable storage options online, including our own beautiful wooden ring box.
