For years we have wondered how ethical and sustainable are diamonds and is there such a thing as an ethical diamond? We wanted to know what makes diamonds ethical and where we could source them. We also wanted to create something a little special this Christmas.
In recent months we have noticed a huge increase in the amount of customers asking for ethical diamonds in custom bespoke pieces. We took it as a sign we should introduce some sparkle into our made to order jewellery collection.
Our capsule collection of diamonds are grown not mined, they are identical to mined diamonds, free of inclusions and other faults, totally transparent and reflect the light beautifully.
'Manmade', 'above ground' or 'lab-grown', which ever phrase is used, although visually identical, grown diamonds are considered better for the Earth and more eco friendly than natural diamonds because it’s not a mined substance, it’s a lab-created one. This means that many ecological and environmental concerns associated with diamonds are not a concern when you use grown diamonds instead. They are better for the environment because it avoids mining and its consequences.
Creating them uses less large machinery, requires no digging, and doesn’t excavate thousands of tons of dirt. Making them requires fewer chemicals and fossil fuels, and there’s no need to alter water sources or entire ecosystems in the process. It also has smaller carbon footprint as it does not need to travel so far and does not contribute to deforestation or negative ecosystem impacts.
Although there are efforts to make mining more ethical and add traceability and trust to the mining of diamonds and gemstones in recent years, the vast majority of diamond mining is done in dangerous conditions and the miners themselves are not well treated or remunerated.
Grown diamonds are created in safe and controlled lab conditions which make them kinder to the people who produce them as well as more environmentally friendly.
We are so grateful for the incredibly positive reaction this capsule collection has received and thank you to all who have invested in these pieces. Want to see more of the collection click here.
