The best engagement rings for hands-on jobs: nurses, makers and active lifestyles

When shopping for or designing an engagement ring, the first things most consider are the visual elements that make up the design of the ring: gemstone types, sizes, cuts, and metal choice. What is often deprioritised is the practicality of the design, and how suitable it is for the lucky wearer's job, hobbies, and lifestyle; however, this is arguably one of the most important factors to take into account. An engagement ring is a piece that will be worn every day, and so needs to be both beautiful and practical!

If your soon-to-be fiancé has a hands-on profession and/or enjoys an active lifestyle, read on for guidance on choosing the perfect engagement ring for them.

Who might need a durable or protective engagement ring?

With the engagement ring being a special ring traditionally worn every day, those with super active lifestyles or hands-on professions might require something a bit more durable and protective compared to traditional designs. For example, a classic high-set style with claw setting where the stone is raised and exposed, while beautiful, could be susceptible to damage for those with hands-on professions, so other designs or small tweaks should be considered.

We have many customers shopping for their partners who are nurses or healthcare professionals, who, depending on their day-to-day duties, may need a protective ring setting or remove their ring completely while at work. This is also the case for those who have to wear gloves in their workplace, whether it's a mechanic's garage or science lab - if you have to protect your hands, you'll want to protect your ring with a low-profile, protective or easily-removable design.

Depending on the instrument played, musicians like guitarists or drummers might also require something a bit more protective that won't get caught or damaged.

The most common hands-on activity often overlooked when shopping for engagement rings is weight-lifting or using gym equipment regularly. Depending on the nature and severity of their workout, their engagement ring should be chosen or designed with this in mind.

This is, of course, not an exhaustive list - you know your partner best, so if their job, hobbies or lifestyle means something they wear every day could become damaged easily, read on to find out what to think about when shopping for their engagement ring.

What are the most durable engagement ring settings?

It depends on how durable or protective you'd like to go, however, the general rule is that low-set engagement rings can handle more active lifestyles and bezel-set stones are more protective than claw-set designs.

A reminder of what these mean...

  • Low-set engagement rings hold their gemstone(s) close to the skin, as the collet (basket that holds the stone(s)) touches the finger as opposed to being raised up away from the shank. These rings often require a shaped or curved wedding band to sit alongside it, as the low-set stone(s) create a curved profile against the skin so a straight wedding ring can't slide underneath the stones.  You can read more about the differences between high and low set engagement rings in our complete guide here.

  • Bezel-set engagement rings have their stone(s) fully surrounded in metal, framing them completely as well as holding them in place. This is different from rings with claw or prong settings, which hold the stone(s) with 4, 6, or more claws, leaving the rest of the stone's perimeter exposed.

While these are general recommendations, you should not feel restricted by these design elements; if your partner has a hands-on job, a claw setting is certainly not out of the question! We can work with you to create something that has the right elements of practicality for you, while not compromising on beauty and design.

Are bezel settings more protective for diamonds?

Yes, generally bezel settings are more protective for diamonds and other gemstones than traditional claw settings. This is because a bezel setting fully surrounds the diamond in gold (or your other chosen precious metal), while claw/prong settings leave some of the edge of the diamond uncovered, making it more susceptible to knocks, scratches, snags or even falling out if not properly set by a reputable company. This risk is higher if it's worn by someone with a hands-on profession.

The protective aspect isn't the only benefit of choosing a bezel engagement ring; some consider them to be more understated or have a vintage, antique look about them. Our bezel engagement ring guide goes into more detail here if you're considering this style.

Can I have a high-set engagement ring if I have a hands-on job?

While we generally recommend low-set designs for those with very hands-on professions, if your heart is set on a high-set engagement ring, it isn't out of the question! We can work with you to ensure your ring fits your vision, while adapting, adjusting, and recommending the right protective elements for your ring. The level of protection you would like in your design depends on the type of active profession or lifestyle you have, and if you are happy to remove it for hands-on moments when it's more likely to get damaged.

At Wild Fawn, our bespoke engagement ring service allows you to have 1-on-1 design support to create your dream ring. The fact that we make every bespoke engagement ring to order means we can customise your setting to you. Our wed-fit rings are designed to achieve the traditional raised look that allows your gemstone to sparkle front and centre, without protruding super high above the finger. This is an especially popular option for those who like the high-set look without it being too statement or 'flashy'.

The best engagement rings for people with hands-on jobs & active lifestyles

If you're looking for low-profile engagement ring designs for active lifestyles, or the safest ring styles to prevent snagging or damage at work, we recommend a low-set engagement ring, or a bezel-set design. A low-set or bezel set style generally holds the precious gemstones closer to the finger, meaning they 'stick out' less, making them less likely to catch on things or get knocked. A bezel ring provides an extra benefit of fully surrounding the stone(s) with metal, making them a great choice for nurses, makers, musicians, construction workers, etc.
