Of all the beautiful engagement rings out there, a cluster ring is perhaps the most unique. The possibilities in style and colour are endless, all thanks to the clustered stone design this ring is named after. Cluster rings are intricate and dazzling, making them sought after by those who love their jewellery to stand out and sparkle.
Cluster engagement rings are one of our favourites to design and craft by hand in our London workshop. We love to experiment with choice and taste, creating rings that feel distinctly special to each wearer. Let's talk about cluster rings, what makes them so unique, and why we believe their symbolism makes them such perfect engagement rings.
What is a cluster ring?
A cluster ring features multiple stones of varying sizes clustered together. This could be in any design, from a uniquely arranged line of stones to one large diamond with smaller stones on each side. Clusters don't need to follow a strict pattern; both symmetrical and asymmetrical designs are equally beautiful, in our opinion. It's all down to your personal taste.
Some other ring styles are often mistaken for cluster rings, such as halo rings, but there are some key differences.
What is the difference between cluster and halo rings?
As we've said, a cluster ring features several gemstones or diamonds clustered together in varying patterns and structures. While also using multiple stones, a halo ring always consists of a large centre stone with a ring of smaller stones surrounding it, giving it the name 'halo'. The difference between a cluster and a halo ring is the arrangement of the gemstones or diamonds.
What does a cluster ring symbolise?
Cluster rings have wonderful meanings, and that's before you start to factor in the symbolism of the stones themselves. Cluster rings speak of unity and strength, which comes not only from the aesthetic look of the closely arranged stones, but also the resilience and durability the structure lends the ring physically. The cluster of diamonds or stones also stands for the interconnectedness of the couple's relationship - both individuals, while already whole on their own, come together to form something even more complete, just like the stones do.
As an engagement ring, the symbolism becomes even more powerful. The couple's love, bond, and commitment to each other are shown through the ring's unity and strength symbolism.

Can a cluster ring be an engagement ring?
People often ask if they can propose with a cluster ring, and the answer is yes! Some people assume a proposal has to be with a classic solitaire ring, but a cluster ring can make the most gorgeous engagement ring. It offers so much: choice of stone types, stone colours, design, and even settings. If you want to get creative and design your own cluster ring, the options are endless for crafting something truly meaningful.
Are cluster rings durable?
Cluster rings are tough thanks to the close arrangement of diamonds or stones. This tightly grouped style lends strength to the structure, which can be made even more durable if the stone setting is enclosed, such as in a bezel setting. This makes cluster engagement rings perfect for those with more active or hands-on lifestyles, or for anyone worried about the possibility of losing stones.
Here at the Wild Fawn workshop, we design and hand-craft our jewellery to be as durable as possible while maintaining its beauty and style. We know that jewellery made well lasts, which is why we're always so proud of our talented goldsmiths and jewellers and the pieces they produce, from delicate chain bracelets to cluster diamond engagement rings.
How to clean a cluster ring
Cleaning jewellery, especially very sentimental pieces, can feel slightly intimidating if you're not sure how to approach it, but we're here to assure you that it's simple with the right tools. Engagement rings with cluster diamonds or gemstones may require more regular cleaning than other pieces due to the number of stones and the spaces between them. However, cleaning them is quick and easy.
Our personal favourite method of cleaning is to use baking soda. Simply dampen a cloth and rub on the baking soda, or sprinkle the powder straight onto the ring, rub it with the cloth, leave for a few minutes, then wash it off. For deeper crevices between your stone or diamond clusters, create a paste with baking soda and water and use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub those gaps.
There are several other ways to clean your jewellery, which you can learn about on our jewellery care page. If you're still unsure about what to use, please don't hesitate to reach out to us - we're more than happy to offer our jewellery cleaning advice and tips.
Our favourite cluster engagement rings
We're proud to handmake all our jewellery at our London studio, including a large selection of cluster gemstone and cluster diamond engagement rings. Some we have created to be purchased now, while others are just waiting for you to choose them before we craft them for you.

For diamond lovers, our Oval Asymmetric Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring is sure to be adored. This gorgeous ring features one large oval lab-grown diamond in the centre, with four smaller diamonds on each side in an asymmetrical arrangement. The grouping of these diamonds creates the most spectacular sparkle, perfect for those who love their jewellery to dazzle and catch the light.
Bezel settings are becoming all the more popular, especially with those who enjoy an active or busy lifestyle, thanks to the durability this style lends the ring. We've designed and hand-crafted several bezel cluster engagement rings, including this bewitching Oval Green Sapphire Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring. You can learn more about bezel engagement rings here.
If you prefer a bit of colour, a gemstone cluster ring would suit you well. Our Green, Pink and Teal Sapphire Engagement Ring with Diamonds is truly beautiful, with its sapphires reflecting the colours of blossoming spring.

Another one of our favourite unique engagement rings is our Asymmetric Cluster Green and Peach Sapphire Engagement Ring. This ring features a row of clustered stones, with a large green sapphire off-centre and peach sapphires and lab-grown diamonds at carefully arranged angles on either side of it.
