It can be daunting researching this niche aspect of the Wedding industry and you may find yourself deep in a Pinterest idea hole. We hope this list might offer some inspiration for your big (eco) day!

Go Eco

There are opportunities in all aspects of your big day to choose more eco-friendly options, from invitations and logistics to decorations!

First things first, start your eco big day off on the right foot but using virtual invitations instead of paper ones which will just go to waste. You can design beautiful invites to send it by email – websites like Paperless Post and GreenVelope are great for this.

When it comes to larger props, don’t buy, hire! You’ll vastly cut down on cost and the travel miles off the deliveries and their packaging if you choose to hire from one company instead.

Ban all disposable cups, plates and cutlery, choose bamboo over plastic where you can, use glasses you can wash, recyclable paper cups and biodegradable straws or hire! Lots of catering companies will provide dishes but if you want to choose your own with a unique twist Bristol Vintage for afternoon tea crockery as well as vintage props, and Rose Metallics for the coolest cutlery hire are great options.

Avoid plastic decorations in favour of paper or fabric decorations. Look on sites like Gumtree or people selling their decorations cheaply or even giving them away for free. Or shop small handmade businesses on Etsy.

Or if you are feeling crafty there are so many ways you can create your own DIY decorations. DIY gin bottle centrepieces (or whatever your spirit is!). They look eco-chic and are an excellent way to reuse bottles and can be recycled afterwards. You can go one step further by choosing a UK-made drinks, this way you’ll reduce your drinks airmiles. Fill The bottles with flowers or you can buy lots of really cute upcycled bottle lights, filled with fairy lights, from Etsy.

Can’t do without balloons? Eco-friendly supplies company Little Cherry sell a pack of 10 balloons made from natural latex that biodegrade much quicker than traditional balloons. You’re still advised against releasing them into the air; instead pop the balloons and place them in your garden compost.

Bunting is a fun and eco-friendly addition to your wedding decor that looks brilliant strung up outside or around a barn. The key to eco-friendly decorations are ones that won’t be thrown away after one use and bunting is brilliant for this. You can DIY your own out of old pieces of fabric or buy cotton bunting to wash and reuse for you next celebration. If you wanted bigger impact you would rent a range of flags and bunting from Event Flag Hire Company.

Flowers often make a wedding, there are so many options out there for dried or live flowers and even potted plants for centre pieces. We recommend you try to find an independent florist to support, this often means you will get a very attentive customised service.

When it comes to confetti, biodegradable is the new plastic! Petal confetti is beautiful and organic and adds a whimsical natural feel to your wedding. Shropshire Petals and Adam Apple have mixes in a huge variety of shades to match your colour scheme.

Having an outdoor wedding or wanting to add some sparkle to the short days of a Winter wedding? Fairy lights that will really create magical ambience. With Low energy LED or even solar powered fairy lights, this could be a great option for your day. Depending on the size of your venue, you might also consider a lighting hire company such as Light Up Love or Oakwood Events based in the UK.

Instead of printing disposable table plans, menus and welcome signs, display them on reusable chalk boards or framed glass. For bespoke sign-writing in the UK try Dream a Little. Or fashion DIY place names from stones or salvaged slate!

Think local and seasonal for everything! Not only will flowers and food produce be cheaper and fresher, but it won’t have travelled as far (cutting down on carbon emissions) and even better you’ll be supporting local businesses. And in that same vein to reduce the amount of cars used in traveling to your venue you could charter local bus companies or Taxis from meeting places like train stations.
